Methods
This index is computed from the official NHTSA campaigns on file for the makes and models in the RigFix catalog. Grand Design and Ram are included because their model years are in that saved list. Campaign text comes from NHTSA's recalls-by-vehicle records. Vehicles affected comes from PotentialNumberofUnitsAffected on the NHTSA campaign record, joined by campaign number.
A brand is the NHTSA make in the catalog. Jayco, Jayco fifth wheels, and Jayco travel trailers stay separate when NHTSA files them as different makes. A tow-vehicle brand is included when the catalog lists it. Ford, Chevrolet, and GMC rows cover the heavy-duty pickups in the catalog, and Ram rows cover the 2500 and 3500.
A campaign counts for a brand when the make, model, and model year on the NHTSA row match a catalog model year. The match uses the same make and model strings the catalog sends to NHTSA. A campaign is counted once for that brand, even when it names several models or several model years.
The date is the day NHTSA received the report. When rows for one campaign carry more than one received date, the index uses the latest of those dates. The trailing 12 months run from October 9, 2025 through October 9, 2026, including both days. Year to date runs from January 1, 2026 through October 9, 2026.
Vehicles affected is NHTSA's potential number of units for the whole campaign. That number is added only when every make and model on the campaign record is a make and model in this catalog, such as the Ford F-250 and F-350 or the Ram 2500 and 3500. A campaign that also names other vehicles, such as an F-150, a Transit, or a Ram 1500, still counts as a campaign, and its unit figure is not added. NHTSA does not split that figure by model, and this index does not invent a split. A campaign limited to two catalog brands adds the full number to each of those brands, so the brand totals cannot be added together. Model-year rows count campaigns only.
A campaign with no potential-unit figure still counts as a campaign. That brand's vehicle total for the period is left blank, because a partial sum would look like a complete total. A campaign with no readable received date, or with no catalog model year, is left out of the rankings and listed with the reason.
More recalls does not automatically mean a brand is less safe. These counts are not a rate. They are not adjusted for how many vehicles a brand built. A campaign can cover one part, or a supplier part used by several brands. A model year on a campaign is not proof that a VIN is included. Check the VIN at NHTSA.
