2022 F-350 10R140 downshifts hard in tow/haul
Years: 2022
Ford service message SSM 50640 says some 2022 F-Super Duty trucks with the 6.7-liter diesel and the 10R140 may downshift hard from 3rd to 2nd, from 2nd to 1st, or both, coming to a stop in tow/haul or with the engine brake on. A 2022 F-350 owner on Ford Truck Enthusiasts writes that the truck is used for towing, and that in tow/haul a hard bang on the downshift shows up at about 60 to 70 percent of stops. The post does not name the engine. Replies call it a known 10-speed behavior, point to a TSB for tow/haul downshifts, and one owner says a dealer reprogram stopped the bang on a later trip pulling a 30-foot gooseneck in tow/haul with the exhaust brake on. SSM 51649 is a separate message. It covers harsh or delayed engagement or shifts on some 2021 through 2023 F-Super Duty trucks with the 10R140, and it does not mention tow/haul.
