2022 F-250 10R140 downshifts hard in tow/haul
Years: 2022
Ford service message SSM 50640 says some 2022 F-Super Duty trucks with the 6.7-liter diesel and the 10R140 automatic transmission may downshift hard from 3rd to 2nd, from 2nd to 1st, or both, when coming to a stop in tow/haul or while using engine-brake mode. On Ford Truck Enthusiasts, a 2022 F-350 owner who tows often writes that in tow/haul, about 60 to 70 percent of stops end in a hard bang of a downshift, short of a metal-on-metal noise. The post does not name the engine. A reply says the behavior is common on the 10-speed and that Ford has called it normal. Another reply says there is a TSB for downshifting in tow/haul. A later reply says a dealer reprogram stopped the hard downshift on a trip of about 600 miles pulling a 30-foot gooseneck in tow/haul with the exhaust brake on. A separate Ford message, SSM 51649, says some 2021 through 2023 F-Super Duty trucks with the 10R140 may have a harsh or delayed engagement or shift, and it points dealers to a break-in routine before they open the transmission. That message does not mention tow/haul.
