2022 F-250 10R140 downshifts hard in tow/haul
Owner reportTransmission
- Symptoms
- Ford service message SSM 50640 says some 2022 F-Super Duty trucks with the 6.7-liter diesel and the 10R140 automatic transmission may downshift hard from 3rd to 2nd, from 2nd to 1st, or both, when coming to a stop in tow/haul or while using engine-brake mode. On Ford Truck Enthusiasts, a 2022 F-350 owner who tows often writes that in tow/haul, about 60 to 70 percent of stops end in a hard bang of a downshift, short of a metal-on-metal noise. The post does not name the engine. A reply says the behavior is common on the 10-speed and that Ford has called it normal. Another reply says there is a TSB for downshifting in tow/haul. A later reply says a dealer reprogram stopped the hard downshift on a trip of about 600 miles pulling a 30-foot gooseneck in tow/haul with the exhaust brake on. A separate Ford message, SSM 51649, says some 2021 through 2023 F-Super Duty trucks with the 10R140 may have a harsh or delayed engagement or shift, and it points dealers to a break-in routine before they open the transmission. That message does not mention tow/haul.
- Likely causes
- SSM 50640 says the tow/haul downshift is a software issue, and that replacing the transmission or other parts will not fix it. SSM 51649 says harsh or delayed shifts may be sticking valves in the main control, and that a solenoid and valve routine plus an adaptive drive can clear them. The two messages describe different dealer paths. The forum posts do not add a measurement.
- Common fixes
- SSM 50640 tells the dealer to perform steps 10 through 15 of TSB 22-2015 and then decide if the downshift is gone. It says a software update was expected by the end of June 2022, and that the truck can be driven until that visit if the interim steps do not fix it. SSM 51649 tells the dealer to run the transmission accelerated main control break-in routine for the clutch the workshop manual points to, then an adaptive-learning drive, before internal service. A forum reply says a dealer reprogram removed the hard downshift while towing. These are dealer operations. They are not a driveway procedure, and this page does not pick a part.
- DIY difficulty
- Not a DIY job in these sources. Both Ford messages are written for the dealer, and the forum repair people describe is a dealer reprogram.
- Parts needed
- SSM 50640 does not name a part. It says a transmission replacement will not fix that downshift. SSM 51649 says to claim causal part 7A100 if the break-in routine is what the dealer performs.
- Warranty notes
- The Ford messages are service instructions for trucks that show the symptom. They are not a recall campaign. The forum post about the reprogram does not say whether the visit was warranty. A 2022 F-350 report is a different model page. Ford's message covers the 2022 F-Super Duty line, which includes this F-250 crew cab.
