Grid heater relay complaints on 2019 and 2020 Ram 3500s
Owner reportEngine
- Symptoms
- NHTSA complaint ODI 11570769, on a 2019 Ram 3500, reports code P2609 and a grid heater relay, and the owner writes that the code often means the grid heater bolt has lost its ability to conduct current. ODI 11559100, on a 2020 Ram 3500, says a dealer told the owner the grid heater relay needed replacement and that continued driving could have led to a fire. Both owners say recall coverage they found was for 2021 through 2023 trucks, not theirs.
- Likely causes
- The complaints name the grid heater relay. The 2019 complaint also offers the owner's reading of what P2609 means. The 23V-060 recall document describes an electrical short in a Generation 1 solid-state intake-air grid heater relay on certain 2021 through 2023 trucks. It does not list 2019 or 2020.
- Common fixes
- The 2020 complaint says the dealer called for a relay replacement and that the owner expected to pay. Recall 23V-060 tells dealers to discard the old relay and install a new one on the trucks it covers. That campaign appears with official recalls when NHTSA returns it for a model year.
- DIY difficulty
- Not rated. The 2020 complaint describes dealer diagnosis. The recall repair is a dealer procedure.
- Parts needed
- The complaints say grid heater relay and do not give a part number. The 23V-060 dealer instructions name relay CSTP13A1AA for trucks in that campaign.
- Warranty notes
- The 2020 complainant writes that the customer was being asked to pay and that the 2021 through 2023 recall did not include the truck. Whether a 2019 or 2020 VIN is in a campaign has to be checked on the year page or at NHTSA by VIN.
