Aisin K1 snap ring on certain 2022 Ram 3500s
Owner reportTransmission
- Symptoms
- NHTSA investigation PE24009, opened March 27, 2024, says the Office of Defects Investigations had 82 complaints of loss of motive power from a K1 snap ring in the transmission of model year 2022 Ram 3500, 4500, and 5500 vehicles. Of those, 16 describe a complete loss of motive power above 25 mph. When the snap ring comes out, forward gears 1 through 4 no longer work. FCA told ODI that a warning can display and that gear 5 and reverse can remain available. Complaint ODI 11752725, on a 2022 Ram 3500, says the transmission was lost to an Aisin K1 clutch and input-shaft failure.
- Likely causes
- FCA customer satisfaction notification documents say the transmission in about 5,440 of the listed 2022 Ram 3500, 4500, and 5500 trucks was built with a defective K1 clutch drum snap ring. The notice applies to trucks with an Aisin transmission, sales code DF2 or DF3. It is not a finding about every 2022 Ram 3500.
- Common fixes
- The customer notice says the dealer replaces the K1 clutch drum snap ring, and that a truck already showing the failure should follow TSB 21-002-23. The notice estimates about 5 hours plus check-in time. ODI's opening resume says this was a technical service bulletin and a customer satisfaction notice, and that the investigation was opened to decide whether the condition is a safety defect.
- DIY difficulty
- Dealer repair. The customer notice describes a transmission job of about 5 hours. It is not a driveway procedure.
- Parts needed
- The customer notice names K1 clutch snap ring part 68269568AB. It says to install the snap ring so the ends sit under the drum teeth.
- Warranty notes
- The customer satisfaction notice says FCA will replace the snap ring free of charge on the VINs it includes. A truck has to be in that VIN list. PE24009 is an investigation record, not itself a recall.
