2023 and 2024 F-250 10R140 poor shift quality
Owner reportTransmission
- Symptoms
- Ford technical service bulletin 26-2086, dated February 27, 2026, says some 2023 and 2024 F-250 trucks with the 6.7-liter diesel and the 10R140 may shift poorly with the powertrain malfunction wrench light on and with codes P2704 and P0771 stored in the transmission control module. The bulletin says this may be the software in that module. It also names 2023 and 2024 F-350 and F-450 trucks with that engine and transmission, and 2024 F-550 and F-600 trucks built on or after May 16, 2024. It does not name a cab. This site has no F-450, F-550, or F-600 pages. The action is to reprogram the PCM and TCM with the latest FDRS software, clear the codes, and run the adaptive-learning drive cycle in workshop manual section 307-01B. NHTSA complaints on the 2023 and 2024 F-250 crew cab describe poor shifts. They do not list P2704 or P0771. Complaint ODI 11671742, on the 2024 crew-cab list, says a new 2024 F-250 had less than 30 miles at purchase and a 10-speed. Erratic upshifts and downshifts started at about 700 miles. The transmission slammed into drive or reverse with a jerk and a loud sound, and the engine revved while the transmission lagged. A dealer visit on June 9, 2025, was described to the owner as a break-in procedure. The problem returned within 30 minutes. The owner wrote that the truck had less than 3,000 miles and was still at the dealer on July 7, 2025. The text does not say crew cab. Ford message SSM 51649 covers a break-in routine for harsh or delayed shifts on some 2021 through 2023 F-Super Duty trucks with the 10R140. It does not add 2024. Complaint ODI 11650237 says the transmission dropped from 3rd to 1st or from 6th to 1st, did not engage gears, and jerked. It does not list a code. Complaint ODI 11659164, on a 2023, says the truck shifted very hard into drive from reverse about 4 times a month. The same filing describes suspension noise. That noise is not this bulletin. Complaint ODI 11717225 says that on an overpass the truck downshifted several times, the engine roared, and the owner guessed about 3,000 rpm, then put it in park and shut it off. It does not list a code. Complaint ODI 11769900 describes a wrench light and a powertrain malfunction message. The codes in that filing are U0121, U1012, and U3035. Those are not P2704 and P0771. These complaints do not show bulletin 26-2086 on every 2023 or 2024 F-250 crew cab.
- Likely causes
- Bulletin 26-2086 says poor shift quality with the wrench light and with both P2704 and P0771 stored in the TCM may be the software in that module. The complaints describe hard shifts, a slam into gear, and a wrench light with different codes. None of them lists P2704 or P0771. The bulletin does not say every shift complaint on these model years is this software. SSM 51649 describes sticking valves and a break-in routine on some 2021 through 2023 trucks. A 2024 owner was told a break-in was performed. That message does not cover 2024. The 2022 tow/haul downshift report is a different Ford message.
- Common fixes
- If the truck slams into gear or the wrench light comes on while you are towing, get off the road when you can and ask the dealer to read the TCM codes. Bulletin 26-2086 applies when the truck is one of the listed models, the shift quality is poor, the wrench light is on, and both P2704 and P0771 are stored. The dealer step is a PCM and TCM reprogram, then an adaptive drive cycle. Labor operation 262086A is 1.1 hours, described as 2023-2024 F-Super Duty 6.7L. Causal part 12B565, condition code 04. The bulletin says an adaptive reset can make upshifts and downshifts firmer than normal for several days. A complaint that does not list those two codes is not, on this page, treated as that bulletin. The 2024 owner who was told a break-in had been done wrote that the shift came back within 30 minutes. Ask which procedure the dealer ran.
- DIY difficulty
- Not a driveway job in these sources. Bulletin 26-2086 says the procedure is for trained technicians and should not be performed by a do-it-yourselfer. The complaints describe dealer visits.
- Parts needed
- The bulletin does not tell the dealer to replace a hard part. It says to reprogram the PCM and TCM and to claim causal part 12B565. The complaints do not name a part.
- Warranty notes
- This is not a recall. Bulletin 26-2086 says a TSB does not change warranty coverage limits, and that coverage follows the causal part. The complaints do not say who paid. A complaint is not a coverage decision, a failure rate, or a diagnosis for another F-250. The years on this page are 2023 and 2024, which are the years the bulletin and these complaints name. The bulletin does not name a cab. The text of the complaints does not say crew cab. They are on the crew-cab complaint lists. The same bulletin names the 2023 and 2024 F-350, which has its own page. The 2022 tow/haul downshift report and the steering-column report on this model are different pages.
