2023 and 2024 Silverado 3500 transmission valve bodies fail, including while towing
Owner reportTransmission
- Symptoms
- NHTSA complaints on the 2023 and 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 describe a transmission valve-body failure on the 10-speed. Complaint ODI 11640471, on a 2024 Silverado 3500, says the valve body failed while the owner was towing a 40-foot camper. The truck went into limp mode on the freeway at 70 mph and would only go 45. A dealer confirmed it. Complaint ODI 11673108, also on a 2024, says the 10-speed valve body failed at 41,000 miles and that the dealership put the parts wait at 3 months. Complaint ODI 11690781 says that while towing a fifth wheel at about 65 mph the transmission shifted hard, the dash said reduced acceleration, and the truck seemed stuck in gear. Complaint ODI 11664357, on a 2023 Silverado 3500 HD, says the transmission shifted hard while pulling a trailer, the truck went into limp mode, the exhaust brake shut off, and the check-engine light set P0747. The owner wrote that the dealer said the valve body was bad and that the 2023 was not in the recall. Complaint ODI 11679652 says the rear tires locked briefly at 40 mph while towing, then the truck went into limp mode, and a dealer confirmed the valve body. Complaint ODI 11637922 says the truck went into limp mode, about 45 mph and no higher than 3rd, while entering the interstate with a 30-foot fifth wheel, and the dealer said a control solenoid valve body had failed and that the part was on backorder. On a Duramax forum list of 10L1000 failures, a 2023 3500 Silverado LT post says the dealer installed a valve body at just under 23,000 miles on a stock truck built in December 2022. A 2024 Silverado 3500 LT dually post says the truck went into limp mode at 110,000 miles on May 12, 2025, and was back on the road June 13 after the valve body arrived. The same list includes a 2024 3500 post that names valve-body part 24065357 after a bang while towing a 24,000-pound RV. That post does not say Chevrolet or GMC. Safety recall 24V-797, GM number N242454440, covers certain 2020 through 2022 Silverado 2500 and 3500 diesels for a transmission control valve that can wear and, in rare cases, lock the rear wheels for a moment. The complaints on this page are 2023 and 2024. Owners wrote that the recall does not list their year. This page is not that recall.
- Likely causes
- The complaints say dealers diagnosed the valve body. One names code P0747. They do not include a tear-down measurement. The forum posts are owners reporting a valve-body replacement. Recall 24V-797 describes wear in a transmission control valve on certain earlier diesel model years. It does not say that wear is the finding on these 2023 and 2024 complaints.
- Common fixes
- If the truck bangs into a lower gear, shows reduced acceleration, or will not leave a low gear while you are towing, get off the road when you can. That is what these complaints describe. Do not treat limp mode as a way to finish a highway tow. The complaints and the forum posts describe dealers replacing the valve body, and some owners wrote that the part had no arrival time. Ask the dealer to read the codes and to say whether the visit is warranty. Ask them to look up recall 24V-797 for the VIN so a 2020 through 2022 truck is not confused with this page. This page does not turn a dealer diagnosis into a driveway job.
- DIY difficulty
- Not a DIY job in these sources. The complaints and the forum posts describe a dealer replacing the valve body.
- Parts needed
- The complaints say a valve body or a control solenoid valve body and do not give a part number. A 2024 3500 post on the Duramax list names part 24065357. That post does not say the truck is a Silverado.
- Warranty notes
- This is not a recall. Recall 24V-797 is a different campaign for certain 2020 through 2022 diesel trucks, and these complaints say a 2023 or 2024 was not on it. The complaints describe dealer diagnosis and a parts wait. They do not all say who paid. A complaint is not a coverage decision for another Silverado 3500. The years on this page are 2023 and 2024, which are the years these valve-body complaints name. The 2024 Silverado 2500 valve-body report is a different model page. A separate 2024 report on this model covers trailer brakes that drop out.
