2024 Silverado 3500 trailer brakes drop out when the trailer battery runs higher
Owner reportElectrical
- Symptoms
- GM customer satisfaction program N232414840, revision 02, dated August 2024, covers certain 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD trucks equipped with integrated trailer brake RPO JL1. It also names certain 2024 GMC Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD trucks, and a 2020 Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD population. The program says that if the trailer battery is charged to a higher voltage than the vehicle battery, that voltage can feed back and create a false short to ground, and trailer braking is disabled with a notification. If the trailer battery voltage then falls below the vehicle battery voltage, trailer braking can return in the same ignition cycle. Dealers replace the trailer brake power module. The program runs until August 31, 2026, and the bulletin says to confirm the VIN shows Open on the Investigate Vehicle History screen before the work starts. NHTSA complaints on the 2024 Silverado 3500 describe the trailer brakes dropping out while towing. Complaint ODI 11611432 says that while towing a Grand Design fifth wheel with solar panels, the brake controller stopped connecting to the trailer brakes. The owner wrote that Chevrolet documentation ties the shutoff to a trailer battery voltage higher than the truck battery. Complaint ODI 11544666 describes the same solar-panel pattern. Complaint ODI 11694147 says that while pulling a 16,000-pound trailer the dash showed trailer brakes disabled, a dealer replaced the brake controller, and the message came back. Complaint ODI 11535340 says the dash showed check trailer wiring, the brakes were out, a dealer replaced the controller, and the message returned after a stop. These complaints do not show the module failing on every 2024 Silverado 3500.
- Likely causes
- The bulletin says a trailer battery at a higher voltage than the truck battery can feed back and set a false short to ground, which disables trailer braking. The solar complaints describe that voltage difference. The complaints that returned after a controller replacement do not say whether the new part was module 85073615. The bulletin does not say every towing complaint on this model year is this program.
- Common fixes
- If the dash says the trailer brakes are disabled, or the controller drops the trailer while you are moving, do not keep towing as if the trailer brakes are working. Pull off when you can. The bulletin tells a dealer to replace the trailer brake power module on a VIN that shows Open, at no charge while the program is in effect. Revision 02 lists 0.6 hour under labor operation 9106980. Ask the dealer to look up N232414840 for the VIN before the next trip. A controller that was already replaced, in two complaints, did not by itself end the message.
- DIY difficulty
- Seeing the dash message is what these owners describe. Replacing the module, in the bulletin, is dealer work. There is no driveway procedure here.
- Parts needed
- The bulletin names trailer brake power module part 85073615, one per truck. It says parts may be limited and tells dealers not to stock them on the shelf.
- Warranty notes
- This is not a recall. N232414840 is a customer satisfaction program. The bulletin says the module replacement is no charge until August 31, 2026, and that any applicable warranty applies after that. A complaint is not a coverage decision for another Silverado 3500. The year on this page is 2024, which is the year the bulletin and these complaints name. The same bulletin names the 2024 Sierra 3500, which has its own page, and the 2024 Silverado 2500. The bulletin also names some 2020 Silverado 3500 trucks. This page does not add 2020, because the complaints cited here are 2024. The valve-body report on this model is a different page.
