68RFE shift complaints on 2019 and 2021 Ram 2500s
Owner reportTransmission
- Symptoms
- NHTSA complaint ODI 11734218 describes a 2021 Ram 2500 6.7 Cummins whose 68RFE automatic transmission does not engage reverse once the transmission is at operating temperature: the engine revs and the truck does not move. The owner uses the truck to tow a trailer of about 7,000 pounds. ODI 11760709, on a 2019 Ram 2500, says the truck stuck in 4th gear while passing, the driver had to pull over and restart, and a check-engine light came on. That complainant writes that the 68RFE seems prone to failure. That sentence is the complainant's reading of owner groups, not an NHTSA finding.
- Likely causes
- The 2021 complaint says the miss is intermittent and shows up when the transmission is hot. It does not include a teardown. The 2019 complaint does not state a failed part.
- Common fixes
- Neither complaint describes a completed repair or a published procedure.
- DIY difficulty
- Not rated. No repair steps are in the complaints.
- Parts needed
- No part numbers are in these complaints. Not every Ram 2500 uses a 68RFE.
- Warranty notes
- The complaints do not say the repairs were covered.
