2026 Keystone Cougar

Cougar ABS connector comes loose and the trailer brakes drop out

Owner reportElectrical
Symptoms
NHTSA complaint ODI 11769765, filed October 7, 2026, on a 2026 Keystone Cougar travel trailer, says a damaged electrical connector at the ABS module left the trailer with no brakes. The owner wrote that the clip that should hold the connector was completely severed and the harness was loose and disconnected, and that stopping distances on the road got longer. On the Keystone Forums, a thread opened March 16, 2026, by takpak describes a new Cougar 25FKWE bought in December. Partway to a campground the truck showed a trailer-brake alarm, the trailer brakes were gone, and the trailer had no turn signals or brake lights. Pulling the breakaway switch still did not apply the brakes. A later post on that thread says the dealer found the ABS module plug was not pushed in all the way. It held long enough to get the trailer home, then let go. The retaining snap broke, so the plug would not stay on, and the dealer ordered a new module.
Likely causes
The 2026 complaint says the connector clip was severed and the harness was disconnected. The forum owner wrote that the plug was not fully seated and that the snap broke when it pulled free. The first dealer account on that thread called it a failed controller. The later account says the plug, not a failed controller, was what the dealer found. The post does not state a model year. A December purchase in a March 2026 thread is not, by itself, a 2026 model year. The posts do not show one loose ABS plug on every 2026 Cougar.
Common fixes
If the trailer brakes, brake lights, or turn signals quit together, stop and do not treat the trailer brakes as working. The 2026 complaint describes a connector that was off the ABS module. The forum owner wrote that the dealer had to drop the underbelly cover to reach the module, and that the damaged snap meant the old module could not be reused. The owner was waiting on a new module. That wait is that owner's account. Ask the dealer to look at the ABS plug and the clip, and ask whether the visit is warranty, before the next trip. A separate 2026 Cougar complaint about frame flex at the pin box is a different filing. It is not this connector.
DIY difficulty
Seeing that the trailer brakes have quit is what these owners describe. Reaching the module, in the forum post, meant dropping the underbelly at the dealer. There is no published procedure here.
Parts needed
No Keystone part number is named. The complaint describes the ABS module connector and its clip. The forum post describes a replacement ABS module after the retaining snap broke.
Warranty notes
This is not a recall. The 2026 complaint does not say who pays. The forum owner wrote that the dealer ordered a new module and does not say the bill was settled. A complaint is not a coverage decision for another Cougar. The year on this page is 2026, which is the year the complaint names. The forum coach is a Cougar 25FKWE bought in December. The post does not state its model year.
