White Hawk spring hangers break off the frame
Owner reportFrame
- Symptoms
- On the Jayco Owners Forum, an owner wrote in July 2023 that a friend's 2018 White Hawk 31BH lost the passenger-rear spring hanger while camping, and that the owner's own 2020 White Hawk 31BH did the same. Both coaches had BAL frames. A reply on that thread says both rear supports broke on a 2020 White Hawk 27RB after a 1,400-mile trip from Texas to California. A separate thread includes a 2019 White Hawk 29FLS whose rear spring hangers broke just after a fuel stop. The owner wrote that the welds did not look broken and that the hanger metal failed: the left side broke and the right side folded. NHTSA complaint ODI 11269226, on a 2018 White Hawk, says the brackets that hold the spring hangers fractured off the frame, smoke came from the rear passenger side at 25 mph, and the manufacturer sent a mechanic who welded new brackets on. Complaint ODI 11448463, also on a 2018 White Hawk, says a weld failed on the passenger-rear spring hanger, the axle shifted, and a wheel started smoking. Complaint ODI 11483768, on a 2020 White Hawk, says the rear axle hanger fell off the frame on the interstate, the trailer dropped at the rear, and the driver got it stopped. Complaint ODI 11717623, on a 2020 White Hawk, says the rear spring holder separated from the frame, the rear axle wobbled, and a front axle that had already been rewelded cracked again.
- Likely causes
- The 2019 White Hawk owner wrote that the hanger metal failed rather than the weld. Complaint ODI 11448463 says a weld failed. Complaint ODI 11717623 says the owner was told the failure came from improper welding. That sentence is the owner's account of what they were told. A reply on the 2018 and 2020 thread says the White Hawk hanger is offset on a frame that is not fully boxed, with a bracket filling the part of the hanger that does not meet the rail. The posts do not show one weld on every White Hawk.
- Common fixes
- Look at the spring hangers before a trip, especially the rear ones. A hanger that is cracked, folded, or pulling off the rail is what these owners found. The 2018 and 2020 owners hired a mobile welder. Each of those two repairs was about $500, which is the opening post's figure. The 2020 27RB owner wrote that an extended warranty covered the repair and that the trailer stayed in California while that approval came through. The 2018 NHTSA complaint says the manufacturer sent a mechanic and new brackets were welded on. One reply on the 2018 and 2020 thread says a 2022 White Hawk 27RB arrived with an 8-inch I-beam and V braces in the hangers. That post is about a later coach, not a repair for the 2018 through 2020 hangers. Welding a hanger is shop work. If a hanger has already broken, have the trailer towed or repaired where it sits instead of towing it.
- DIY difficulty
- Looking under the trailer at the hangers is something the owners describe doing. Replacing or welding a hanger, in these reports, was a welder, a dealer, or a mechanic the manufacturer sent. There is no measured procedure here.
- Parts needed
- No Jayco part number is named. The posts talk about the original spring hanger, a replacement bracket, and gussets or V braces some owners added.
- Warranty notes
- This is not a recall. The 2020 White Hawk 27RB owner wrote that an extended warranty paid for the repair. The 2018 complaint says the manufacturer sent a mechanic. The 2019 owner wrote that Jayco was sending brackets and did not say the bill was settled. A post is not a coverage decision for another White Hawk. The years on this page are the 2018, 2019, and 2020 coaches these reports name.
