Bighorn slide floors rot at the outside edge
Owner reportSlides
- Symptoms
- On the Heartland Owners Forum, in a thread that opens with a 2020 Bighorn, a reply from May 26, 2022, is a 2018 Big Horn whose slide floor rotted at the door-side back corner. The owner wrote that rain ran off the slide roof, down the corner, and into the wood edge that was exposed under the slide, and that the seals were not what let the water in. The coach was in a shop for 7 months, and the owner put the bill, with new slide seals, at close to $7,000. Those figures are the owner's. This site does not list a 2020 Bighorn. A separate thread includes a 2018 Bighorn Traveler whose owner wrote, on October 17, 2020, that the floors in two slide-outs rotted the same way. The owner wrote that Heartland covered the floor replacement under the 3-year structural warranty and said the drip edge on the bottom had been placed wrong at the factory. That reason is the owner's account of what Heartland said.
- Likely causes
- Both owners describe water getting into the wood at the outer end of the slide floor. One wrote that the wood edge was exposed and the sealant there was missing. The other wrote that Heartland attributed the rot to a drip edge that was placed wrong. The threads do not show one missed seal on every Bighorn. The opening post on the first thread is a 2020 coach, which is not a Bighorn year on this site.
- Common fixes
- Look at the outside end of each slide floor, especially the lower corners where water runs off the slide roof. Soft or stained wood is what these owners found. If the wood is soft, the repairs in these threads were shop work. One reply says the slide often has to come out of the coach. Owners in these threads name Affinity RV in Goshen, Indiana. Ask Heartland or the dealer to look at the wood and the drip edge, and ask whether they will authorize the shop, before the coach is hauled. Do not assume a shop named in an old thread still does this warranty work.
- DIY difficulty
- Looking at the slide corners is something the owners describe doing. Replacing a slide floor, in these threads, was a shop. One account says the coach was in the shop for months. These posts are not a measured procedure.
- Parts needed
- No Heartland part number is named. The posts describe the slide floor wood, seals, and the drip edge along the bottom of the slide.
- Warranty notes
- This is not a recall. The Bighorn Traveler owner wrote that Heartland paid for two slide floors under the 3-year structural warranty after a long back-and-forth. The other 2018 owner described a shop bill close to $7,000 and did not say Heartland paid. A post is not a coverage decision for another Bighorn. The year on this page is 2018, which is the year both owners name. The 2020 coach that opens the first thread is not a Bighorn year on this site.
