2023 GMC Sierra 3500

2023 and 2024 Sierra 3500 transmission valve bodies fail, including while towing

Owner reportTransmission
Symptoms
NHTSA complaints on the 2023 and 2024 GMC Sierra 3500 describe a transmission valve-body failure on the 10-speed. Complaint ODI 11714631, on a 2024 Sierra 3500, says the rear wheels locked while the owner was towing a 24,000-pound fifth wheel on the freeway. A dealer diagnosed the valve body. The owner wrote that the repair took more than a month. Complaint ODI 11660712 says that at 50 mph the truck would not go faster, the check-engine light was on, and a dealer said the valve body was faulty. Complaint ODI 11657791 says a loud pop at 30 mph was followed by a loss of power, and the dealer diagnosed the valve body. Complaint ODI 11738513 says a dealer diagnosed a valve-body failure and a valve-body rebuild, and the owner compared it with recall N242454440. Complaint ODI 11711114, on a 2023 Sierra 3500 HD with the 6.6 Duramax, says the transmission shifted hard at 55 mph after 23,000 miles, set codes P0700 and P0747, and stayed in 5th. The owner wrote that the dealer would not release the truck. A Drive article describes a 2023 GMC Sierra 3500 HD owner who contacted the magazine while waiting on a valve body, and it says he was without the truck for two months. Safety recall 24V-797, GM number N242454440, covers certain 2020 through 2022 Sierra 2500 and 3500 diesels for a transmission control valve that can wear and, in rare cases, lock the rear wheels for a moment. The complaints on this page are 2023 and 2024. Owners wrote that the recall does not list their year. This page is not that recall.
Likely causes
The complaints say dealers diagnosed the valve body. The 2023 complaint names codes P0700 and P0747. They do not include a tear-down measurement. The article is an account of one owner's wait. Recall 24V-797 describes wear in a transmission control valve on certain earlier diesel model years. It does not say that wear is the finding on these 2023 and 2024 complaints.
Common fixes
If the truck bangs into a lower gear, locks the rear wheels for a moment, or will not leave a low gear while you are towing, get off the road when you can. That is what these complaints describe. Do not treat limp mode as a way to finish a highway tow. The complaints describe dealers replacing or rebuilding the valve body, and some owners wrote that the truck stayed at the dealer while the part was out. Ask the dealer to read the codes and to say whether the visit is warranty. Ask them to look up recall 24V-797 for the VIN so a 2020 through 2022 truck is not confused with this page.
DIY difficulty
Not a DIY job in these sources. The complaints describe a dealer replacing the valve body.
Parts needed
The complaints say a valve body and do not give a part number. A 2024 3500 post on a Duramax list, cited on the Silverado 3500 page, names part 24065357. That post does not say the truck is a Sierra.
Warranty notes
This is not a recall. Recall 24V-797 is a different campaign for certain 2020 through 2022 diesel trucks, and these complaints say a 2023 or 2024 was not on it. The complaints describe dealer diagnosis and a parts wait. They do not all say who paid. A complaint is not a coverage decision for another Sierra 3500. The years on this page are 2023 and 2024, which are the years these valve-body complaints name. The Sierra 2500 valve-body report is a different model page. A separate 2024 report on this model covers trailer brakes that drop out.
