2024 Forest River Rockwood

Rockwood tires are left with cut TPMS band scraps inside

Owner reportWheels
Symptoms
NHTSA complaint ODI 11598225, filed July 2, 2024, on a 2024 Forest River Rockwood, says the owner bought a MicroLite 2515s in January. An internal TPMS sensor on the front passenger tire died. A tire tech, installing a replacement sensor, found cut pieces of the metal band that holds the sensor loose inside the tire. The owner wrote that two more tires had metal scraps, so three of the four tires had them, and that the pieces can be heard when a wheel is spun. The owner wrote that whoever installed the sensors cut the band and left the scraps in the tire. On Forest River Forums, Ox Brown wrote on July 1, 2024, about a 2024 2515s with the same finding: three of four tires had metal fragments from the band, and the complaint was filed with photos the next day. That post and ODI 11598225 are the same coach. A reply on that thread points at an older thread and says Brian Clemens wrote that the tire and wheel supplier installed the bands. An earlier Forest River Forums thread, started October 7, 2020, by Haxsaw1967, says a newly bought Rockwood Ultra Lite 2614BS had stainless clamp scraps inside the tires from the TST internal sensor bands, about 7.5 inches of scrap in each tire. That figure is the owner's. The post does not state a model year. A reply in that October 2020 thread says a Rockwood 2650WS bought new that January had the same scraps after about 500 miles, found while Castle Rock tires were being changed to Goodyear Endurance. That reply does not state a model year.
Likely causes
The 2024 complaint and the July 2024 post say cut band scraps were left inside the tires when the internal TPMS sensors were installed. The owner attributes the install to Forest River. The reply that names Brian Clemens says the tire and wheel supplier installed the bands. That is the reply, not a second inspection of the 2515s. The 2020 posts describe the same kind of scraps in other Rockwood tires and do not name a model year. The posts do not show scraps in every Rockwood tire.
Common fixes
If an internal sensor has failed, or you can hear something moving in a tire, have the tire taken off the rim before the next trip. Cut metal inside a tire is what the 2515s tech found, and what the 2020 posts describe. The 2024 owner had the other tires checked and found scraps in three of four. The 2020 posts do not describe a finished factory repair. Ask the dealer or Forest River to look at the tires, and ask who pays, before the trailer is towed. Do not keep driving on a tire you can hear metal in.
DIY difficulty
Hearing a piece move when a wheel is spun is something the 2024 owner describes. Taking the tire off the rim, in these reports, was a tire shop. There is no published procedure here.
Parts needed
No Forest River part number is named. The reports describe TST internal TPMS sensors, the metal bands that hold them, and the scraps left in the tires. The 2020 reply names Castle Rock tires and Goodyear Endurance tires.
Warranty notes
This is not a recall. The 2024 complaint and the July 2024 post are the same coach, and they do not say who paid to clean the tires. The October 2020 posts do not name a model year, so those coaches are not given a year on this page. A complaint is not a coverage decision for another Rockwood. The year on this page is 2024, which is the year the complaint and the July 2024 post name.
