2023 and 2024 F-350 10R140 poor shift quality
Owner reportTransmission
- Symptoms
- Ford technical service bulletin 26-2086, dated February 27, 2026, says some 2023 and 2024 F-350 trucks with the 6.7-liter diesel and the 10R140 may shift poorly with the powertrain malfunction wrench light on and with codes P2704 and P0771 stored in the transmission control module. The bulletin says this may be the software in that module. It also names 2023 and 2024 F-250 and F-450 trucks with that engine and transmission, and 2024 F-550 and F-600 trucks built on or after May 16, 2024. It does not name a cab. This site has no F-450, F-550, or F-600 pages. The action is to reprogram the PCM and TCM, clear the codes, and run the adaptive-learning drive cycle in workshop manual section 307-01B. NHTSA complaints on the 2023 and 2024 F-350 crew cab describe poor shifts. They do not list P2704 or P0771. Complaint ODI 11756450, on a 2023, says the transmission slips or flares, usually from 3rd to 4th or from 8th to 9th, sometimes with a clunk, and more often when it is warm. The owner first noticed the 3rd-to-4th slip at 43,000 miles. Complaint ODI 11578344 says the shift from 3rd to 4th delays for seconds and then slams. The owner, in Minnesota, wrote that on slick roads the truck swings sideways, and that this truck does not have a TSB. Complaint ODI 11732018, on a 2024, says that in tow/haul on a slight downgrade, while towing a 9,000-pound fifth wheel, a slight brake application downshifts from 10th to 4th at 60 mph or more, the engine goes over 5,000 rpm, and the rear wheels lock slightly on dry roads. The weight and the rpm are the owner's. It happened more than once. Those codes are not in the filing. Bulletin 26-2086 does not describe a 10th-to-4th downshift. Ford message SSM 50640 describes a hard 3rd-to-2nd or 2nd-to-1st downshift in tow/haul on some 2022 F-Super Duty trucks. It does not add 2023 or 2024, and it does not describe this 10th-to-4th shift. Complaint ODI 11721874 says the 10-speed crawls through 3 or 4 gears in an intersection, jerks into 2nd at 1 mph, and downshifts hard from 4th to 3rd toward a light. The same filing describes mirror warning lights with no traffic nearby. Those lights are not this bulletin. Complaint ODI 11674055 says a 2024 F-350 downshifted with no warning light. A dealer said a TCM software update had been completed. The filing does not say the downshift was diagnosed beyond that. The manufacturer referred the owner to NHTSA. The mileage is about 21,000. The text does not say crew cab. It does not list P2704 or P0771. These complaints do not show bulletin 26-2086 on every 2023 or 2024 F-350 crew cab.
- Likely causes
- Bulletin 26-2086 says poor shift quality with the wrench light and with both P2704 and P0771 stored in the TCM may be the software in that module. The complaints describe a slip or flare, a delayed slam into 4th, a 10th-to-4th downshift while towing, and a downshift after a software update. None of them lists P2704 or P0771. The bulletin does not say every shift complaint on these model years is this software. SSM 50640 is a 2022 tow/haul message about a different downshift. The posts do not show one cause for every F-350 crew cab.
- Common fixes
- If the transmission slams into a lower gear or the rear wheels lock for a moment while you are towing a fifth wheel, get off the road when you can. That is what the 2024 tow/haul complaint describes. Do not treat that downshift as the condition in bulletin 26-2086 unless the wrench light is on and both P2704 and P0771 are stored. When those codes are stored, the bulletin tells the dealer to reprogram the PCM and TCM and to run the adaptive drive cycle. Labor operation 262086A is 1.1 hours. Causal part 12B565, condition code 04. The bulletin says an adaptive reset can make shifts firmer than normal for several days. Ask the dealer to read the codes and to say which message they are following. A TCM update that was already done, in one complaint, is not the same sentence as a stored P2704 and P0771.
- DIY difficulty
- Not a driveway job in these sources. Bulletin 26-2086 says the procedure is for trained technicians and should not be performed by a do-it-yourselfer. The complaints describe dealer visits.
- Parts needed
- The bulletin does not tell the dealer to replace a hard part. It says to reprogram the PCM and TCM and to claim causal part 12B565. The complaints do not name a part.
- Warranty notes
- This is not a recall. Bulletin 26-2086 says a TSB does not change warranty coverage limits, and that coverage follows the causal part. One owner wrote that the truck does not have a TSB. The complaints do not say who paid. A complaint is not a coverage decision, a failure rate, or a diagnosis for another F-350. The years on this page are 2023 and 2024, which are the years the bulletin and these complaints name. The bulletin does not name a cab. Two complaint texts do not say crew cab. They are on the crew-cab complaint lists. The same bulletin names the 2023 and 2024 F-250, which has its own page. The 2022 tow/haul downshift report and the steering-column report on this model are different pages.
