F-350 crew cab steering wheel oscillation after a bump

Owner reportSteering
Symptoms
Ford special service message SSM 49740 says some 2017-2021 F-Super Duty four-wheel-drive trucks may intermittently show excessive steering oscillation, and it tells the dealer to replace the steering damper. This site's F-350 crew cab years inside that range are 2020 and 2021. Bulletin 19-2274, dated September 10, 2019, is the earlier document. It covers some 2017-2019 F-250 and F-350 four-wheel-drive trucks whose steering wheel keeps oscillating after a bump or an expansion joint above 45 mph (72 km/h), and it says the steering-linkage damper may have too much lag. It does not add 2020 or 2021. On Ford Truck Enthusiasts, an owner of a 2019 F-350 4x4 crew cab long bed, which the post abbreviates CCLB, with the 6.7-liter engine, wrote about an uncontrollable shake of the steering wheel while towing. The owner was a full-time RVer, put the travel trailer at 9,500 pounds, and put the loaded truck at just over 11,100 pounds, including about 900 pounds of tongue weight. Those figures are the owner's. The owner wrote that slowing to 30 mph or less was the way to stop the shake. This site's F-350 crew cab list starts at 2020, so 2019 is not a page here.
Likely causes
SSM 49740 tells the dealer to replace the damper and to use the workshop manual if the oscillation comes back. Bulletin 19-2274 says the 2017-2019 shake may be damper lag, on a four-wheel-drive F-250 or F-350, after a bump above 45 mph. Neither document names a cab. The forum post names a crew cab. The messages do not say every F-350 does this.
Common fixes
SSM 49740 tells the dealer to install steering damper KC3Z-3E651-B. If the shake returns, the message points to the workshop manual section on steering-linkage diagnosis, including the videos in that section. Bulletin 19-2274, for a 2017-2019 truck, tells the dealer to set the tire pressures from the door sticker and to replace the damper when the package date is on or after May 1, 2018. The forum owner wrote that slowing down stopped the shake. That is the owner's account, not a step in the service message. If the wheel oscillates and keeps going, get the truck to a Ford dealer and ask whether SSM 49740 applies to that VIN. Tell them about a lift, different tires, or a non-Ford stabilizer. Bulletin 19-2274 says those changes come off before its procedure and that the removal is not a warranty repair. A 2020 or 2021 truck is in the SSM year range. It is not in the 2017-2019 bulletin.
DIY difficulty
Not a DIY job in Ford's documents. SSM 49740 and bulletin 19-2274 are dealer instructions. The forum post does not describe a driveway damper replacement.
Parts needed
SSM 49740 lists damper KC3Z-3E651-B and causal part 3E651. Bulletin 19-2274 lists damper HC3Z-3E651-F and the same causal part. The two documents name different damper numbers. This page does not pick one of them for a 2020 or 2021 VIN.
Warranty notes
This is not a recall. SSM 49740 does not say who pays. Customer Satisfaction Program 20N04 covers certain 2017-2019 F-250 and F-350 4x4 trucks, which can include the 2019 crew cab in the forum, and the June 10, 2022 supplement does not add 2020 or 2021. Ask the dealer to check the VIN in OASIS before you count on that program. The 2022 F-350 crew cab tow/haul downshift is a different bulletin and a different page. The F-250 crew cab oscillation report covers the years that bulletin and this service message name for that model.
