# Jay Feather fresh-water tanks drop when the straps let go

Owner reports are not official NHTSA recalls. Each report cites a public complaint, bulletin, forum thread, or manufacturer page. It is not a failure rate, a diagnosis, or a repair procedure.

**Owner report** · Frame · 2022 Jayco travel trailers Jay Feather

## Symptoms

NHTSA complaint ODI 11528983, filed June 26, 2023, on a 2019 Jayco Jay Feather, says the fresh-water tank dropped while the owner was filling it at home and came to rest on the axles. The owner wrote that Jayco said the trailer was out of warranty. Complaint ODI 11679638, filed August 10, 2025, on a 2022 Jay Feather Micro 166FBS, says the 50-gallon fresh tank was gone while the trailer was being towed at about 65 mph in Georgia. Underbelly panels were dragging, and the plumbing and electrical lines were severed. The owner, who wrote that the trailer was bought new in late August 2022, found flat steel straps held by self-tapping screws, one strap already on the road and the other held by one loose screw. On the Jayco Owners Forum, a 2024 Jay Feather 19MRK owner asked in June 2025 how the fresh tank is supported, after seeing tanks fall out of other trailers. That owner had not had a tank fall, and this site does not list a 2024 Jay Feather. A reply describes Jay Feather tanks held by steel bars and self-drilling screws, including a 2016 coach whose owner replaced those screws with bolts. 2016 is older than the Jay Feather years on this site.

## Likely causes

The 2022 complaint says the straps were fastened with self-tapping screws, and that a cover of corrugated plastic hides those screws unless the belly is opened. The forum replies say those screws can be overdriven so the threads they cut do not hold. That is the reply. The 2019 complaint says the tank dropped while it was being filled and does not describe the straps. The posts do not show one loose screw on every Jay Feather.

## Common fixes

Before a trip with water in the fresh tank, look at the straps if you can drop the belly cover enough to see them. A reply on the forum says loosening a few screws in that cover is enough to look with a flashlight. A strap that is loose, missing, or held by a screw that spins is what the 2022 owner found after the tank was already gone. If the tank is sitting on the axle or the belly panel, do not tow it. The 2022 owner tied up loose lines and drove about 46 miles to a shop. That was that owner's choice on the side of the road, not a procedure. The repair estimate in that complaint is about $3,000, which is the owner's figure. Ask the dealer to look at the tank mounts and to say whether the visit is warranty before the next trip.

## DIY difficulty

Looking at the straps is something the forum describes. Putting a dropped tank back and repairing torn lines, in the 2022 complaint, was shop work. Replacing screws with bolts is what one 2016 owner did. That is not a measured procedure for another coach.

## Parts needed

No Jayco part number is named. The 2022 complaint describes the original steel straps and self-tapping screws. A forum reply names 1/4-inch bolts used in place of those screws on a 2016 Jay Feather.

## Warranty notes

This is not a recall. The 2019 owner wrote that Jayco said the tank was out of warranty. The 2022 owner wrote that a 3-year structural warranty was refused. The forum does not record a warranty decision. A complaint is not a coverage decision for another Jay Feather. The years on this page are 2019 and 2022, which are the years the complaints name. The 2024 and 2016 coaches in the forum are not Jay Feather years on this site.
